IDGC Survey on Mount Hymettus

Mount Hymettus “Speaks” with the Voice of the Citizens

Athenians send a powerful message through the latest IDGC survey.
A new primary research study conducted by Industry Disruptors Game Changers (IDGC), gives voice to the citizens of Attica revealing a deep emotional and active connection with the mountain that breathes beside the city.
In an Athens that longs for public space, greenery, and peace, Mount Hymettus emerges as more than just a natural formation. For its citizens, it is a “lifeline,” “lung,” “beauty,” and “oasis.”
These are the words used by the people themselves, as captured in the survey, where an overwhelming 92.4% of respondents describe Hymettus in emotionally positive terms—a sign of the mountain’s profound and authentic place in the hearts of the community. At the same time, the message is clear:
“Protect it—but with us. Through participation, collaboration, trust, and transparency.”

What Athenians Say About Hymettus

On the 4th Forum of the Association for the Protection and Development of Hymettus (S.P.A.Y.), held on June 4–5, 2025 aligned with World Environment Day (June 5), IDGC conducted a primary quantitative public opinion survey to explore the relationship between Attica’s residents and Mount Hymettus.

The survey was carried out in late May 2025 using digital methods, with a representative sample of 500 residents across the Attica basin. Notably, 55% of participants were from municipalities that are members of S.P.A.Y.

Key Findings

Hymettus as an Emotional Landmark

92.4% of participants used words such as “lifeline,” “lung,” “beauty,” “calm,” and “nature” to describe Hymettus. The mountain is not simply a scenic backdrop—it is a source of life and emotional well-being.

Positive Accessibility – Constant Care Needed

74.8% rated access to the mountain positively, and 6 in 10 noted improvements in recent years—mainly due to volunteer efforts and infrastructure enhancements (trails, signage, cleanliness). Still, 1 in 5 reported negative experiences or environmental damage, indicating that Hymettus’ condition remains delicate.

Top Concerns: Wildfires and Waste

Citizens voiced serious concerns about wildfire risks and widespread litter, emphasizing the urgent need for consistent protection and regular maintenance.
